The $0 item exchanges feature allows your Shopify shop to accept, process, and generate shipping labels for returned items that cost the shopper $0 to purchase — 100% discounted items for influencers or VIPs, or buy-one-get-one sales.

What are $0 item exchanges?

Examples of $0 items include:

  • 100% discounted items for influencers or VIPs

  • Buy-one-get-one items

  • Items that are pending payment

By enabling $0 item exchanges, you’ll have the ability to start an exchange and generate return shipping labels for items that have $0 value as long as the item is fulfilled and marked as paid.

How $0 item exchanges work

When exchanging a  $0 item, the shopper will only see the “exchange” option when returning that item in the Order Return and Exchange Service; the exceptions to this policy are if eligible exchange items are out of stock (in which case the exchange option will not be available) or if you’ve enabled $0 item returns for your store. If $0 item returns are enabled and the item has been paid, then the “refund” option will also be available. Click here for more information on $0 item returns.

Note: $0 item exchanges will not work with gift returns. If a $0 item is the only item in a gift return, then the gift returner will see a page with the error message “Oops, something went wrong! Please contact customer service.”

Enabling $0 item exchanges

Contact a Happy Returns team member to enable $0 item exchanges for your Shopify shop. After enabling the feature, as long as an order has been fulfilled and paid, an item costing $0 can be exchanged and a return shipping label can be generated.

FAQs

When $0 item returns are also enabled, then both exchanges and refunds will be available for $0 item returns.

For orders with both $0 items and non-$0 items, any $0 exchange items will follow the $0 exchange flow, and all other items will follow your standard return policy flow.

If the product has not shipped or payment has not been authorized as “paid”, then the product is not returnable and cannot be selected for a $0 item exchange.

If your Shopify shop does not have $0 item exchanges enabled, then when a shopper attempts to exchange a $0 item on the Order Return and Exchange Service, they will see the message “contact customer service” under the item, the item will appear grayed out, and the user will not have the option to exchange the item.
